General Information on Norfolk

Norfolk is large county of around 1.300,000 acres (2.054miles It measures around 65 miles East to West by approximately 45 miles North to South and its coastline extends for about 90 miles. It consists of about one-third of the large landmass which sticks out from the eastern side of England. The population is around 1.5 million people. Contrary to a popular perception parts of Norfolk are quite hilly, particularly the areas around Cromer and Sheringham and the south of Norwich. It ranges in height from a couple of feet below sea level to 300 feet above.

To the west of the county there are the sandy soils of Breckland and the large forests around Thetford; to the north and south, arable land and trees cover the gently rolling countryside. To the east it becomes much flatter owing to the proximity of the North Sea and the Norfolk Broads which adjoin the coast. The Broads are unique to Norfolk. They are large expanses of inland water, which came about as a result of medieval man digging peat for fuel. They are now an important tourist attraction and financial asset to the county and as such are preserved so as not to ruin them. They are certainly worth a visit and cater for the tourist in many ways, not least by offering many miles of navigable waterways for the boat enthusiast. All in all it is a county of great charm and variation and offers much to all who visit or reside here.

NORWICH…

Norwich is the capital city of Norfolk with a population of around 130,000. It has two "hearts"; firstly the spiritual one in the Cathedral and the area around it, secondly the Norman Castle and market place. This market is one of the biggest outdoor markets in Europe. The cathedral was built about 900 years ago and is one of the finest and tallest in the UK. It is surrounded by magnificent cloisters and ancient houses which make up its "close". Tombland, which adjoins it, is the site of a Saxon market place and is one of the most picturesque areas in the city. The Castle, built in Norman times, still dominates the centre of the city and today serves as a superb museum housing many local artefacts and an excellent art gallery mainly composed of the works of the "Norwich School" including Thirtle and Cotman. Norwich was the second city of Britain in the Middle Ages right up to the 1700's. It has more pre-Reformation churches than York, Bristol and London combined. It was once said that it had a church for every week of the year and a pub for every day! It is probably true today. It has appeared in the E.E.C's league table of "most habitable" cities.
